The French interbranch organisation for the genetic improvement of ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats), founded in 2006; it was recognised by ministerial order in 2006 and confirmed by Decree No 2014-572 in 2014. It supports the approved breeding organisations (organismes de sélection) and their partners in organising and quality-assuring the national breeding system — identification, pedigree, performance recording, genotyping, genetic evaluation. More than 50 ruminant breeds are under selection in France and over 52,000 breeders take part in the programmes (2023).
Umbrella body: a farmer cannot be a direct member. Its members are national organisations: Chambre d'agriculture France, CNBL, Eliance, FNB, FNO, FNEC, FNPL, GDS France, Races de France; Idele and France informatique élevage are associate members. Breeders take part through their breed's breeding organisation and departmental bodies.
Farmers pay no fee to FGE. According to its website, FGE is financially supported by the Confédération nationale de l'élevage (CNE).
