No direct farmer membership
The national association of the protection consortia for Italian food products with a protected designation of origin or geographical indication (PDO, PGI); founded in 2006 as AICIG. By its own account its members are 90 consortia and two associations of consortia (Afidop, Salumitalia), covering more than 95% of Italian GI production. It represents the consortia and helps them with specification amendments, promotion programmes and training; farmers cannot join directly.
Origin Italia's members are PDO/PGI consortia, not farms. A farmer may be concerned by the consortium of their own product: under Article 14(15)–(16) of Law 526/1999 the protection and promotion costs of a ministry-appointed consortium are borne by all producers and users in the PDO/PGI control system, whether or not they are members ('erga omnes'). The levy is collected by the specific consortium, not by Origin Italia. In 2026 the Ministry issued a new decree on consortia implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/1143.
Origin Italia charges no fee to farmers. The 'erga omnes' levy is set and collected by the relevant PDO/PGI consortium in proportion to the quantity under control — ask your own consortium for the amount.
