Breeders' association for the native Hungarian water buffalo, founded in 1999 in Dévaványa and a recognised breed-maintaining organisation since 2009. Of its 166 members, 150 are active breeders; much of the herd is kept by national parks, but the share of private farmers is growing. Buffaloes entered in the herd book count as protected native animals, which can give keepers access to aid.
According to the association, anyone wishing to breed native Hungarian water buffalo has to join. Conditions: at least one female native Hungarian buffalo older than 9 months registered to the breeder in ENAR, plus a paying-agency (MVH) registration number and a holding code. Admission is decided by the spring general assembly (March–May). Only animals already registered in 2013 and their offspring can enter the herd book. Under 188/2019. (VII. 30.) Korm. rendelet the association may not refuse membership if the breeder accepts the membership obligations, and it must enter animals of the breed in the herd book on request. To produce and sell registered breeding animals you have to take part in the breeding programme.
