Mandatory levy, no membership
The protection consortium for the great wines of the Langhe in Piedmont, based in Alba; its predecessor was founded in 1934. It protects nine designations: Barolo, Barbaresco, Diano d'Alba and Dogliani DOCG, plus Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba, Langhe, Nebbiolo d'Alba and Verduno DOC. It reports over 500 members (597 names in its member list) and an area of about 10,000 ha of vineyards in 96 municipalities. It monitors the market, manages the production rules and promotes the wines and the area.
Membership is voluntary (winemaker and grape-grower membership). Under Legge 238/2016 art. 41 c. 5, however, the consortium's costs are borne not only by members but by every operator registered in the control system, even non-members ("erga omnes"): anyone who grows grapes for, makes or bottles one of the nine designations above pays a contribution. The ministry confirmed the mandate by decree of 9 June 2022.
The consortium does not publish its membership fee or the erga omnes contribution — please ask directly. By law the contribution is based on the quantity of grapes, wine and bottles produced; details are set by D.M. 18 luglio 2018.
For information only, not legal advice. Mandatory membership is set by local law — each profile lists its source.
