Statutory farm insurance · Germany · national
Mandatory if…
The statutory social insurer for German agriculture, forestry and horticulture, based in Kassel. It combines agricultural accident insurance (Berufsgenossenschaft), the farmers' pension fund (Alterskasse) and health and long-term care insurance (LKK). Farms must be registered here, and farmers pay their compulsory insurance contributions here. It is not a voluntary association but a statutory insurer.
Accident insurance (SGB VII § 123): every agricultural and forestry enterprise (including horticulture, vineyards, fish ponds and livestock) is covered with no size threshold; exceptions are household and ornamental gardens and allotments, unless worked with hired labour or for sale. Pension (ALG § 1), health and care insurance: only entrepreneurs whose holding reaches the minimum size set by the pension fund (Mindestgröße) — in 2025, e.g., 8 ha of farmland, 16 ha of alpine pasture, 75 ha of forest, 2 ha of vineyard, 2.2 ha of special crops, 2.5 ha of Christmas trees; much smaller for horticulture (0.03–0.30 ha), 100 colonies for beekeeping.
The pension fund (Alterskasse) contribution is a uniform monthly amount: from 1 July 2026 EUR 325 for the farmer and spouse, EUR 162.50 for a working family member; with low income a subsidy of up to EUR 195 per month is available (2026). The accident insurance contribution depends on the farm's risk (area, livestock, labour requirement), and the health insurance contribution on farm size — SVLFG sets these individually.
