No direct farmer membership
The national confederation of the voluntary protection consortia for Italian wines with a designation of origin (DOC, DOCG, IGT), founded in Bologna in 1979. It gives the consortia legal, legislative and technical support, represents them with ministries and at EU level, and defends Italian designations. According to the website it has about 80 wine consortia as members; farmers cannot join directly.
Federdoc's members are wine protection consortia, not farms. A grape grower is concerned by the consortium of their own designation (DOC/DOCG): under Article 41 of Law 238/2016 the costs of a ministry-recognised, sufficiently representative consortium are borne by every grower, winemaker and bottler registered in the control system, even if they are not members ('erga omnes' levy). The levy is collected by the specific consortium, not by Federdoc.
Federdoc charges no fee to farmers. The 'erga omnes' levy is set and collected by the relevant wine consortium in proportion to the quantity under control (grapes, wine, bottles) — ask your own consortium for the amount.
For information only, not legal advice. Mandatory membership is set by local law — each profile lists its source.
