Mandatory if…
The Polish state social insurance fund for farmers, supervised by the agriculture minister. A farmer insured with KRUS pays contributions here rather than to ZUS (Poland's general social insurer), at a lower flat rate. KRUS pays farmers' old-age and disability pensions, sickness benefit and compensation for accidents at work, and handles cases through local branches.
Insured by law (ustawa o ubezpieczeniu społecznym rolników, art. 7(1) and art. 16(1)) is any adult farmer living in Poland who personally and on their own account carries out farming (crops, livestock, horticulture, fruit, beekeeping, fish) on a holding in their possession, if the holding's agricultural land exceeds 1 ha przeliczeniowy (a 'converted hectare' weighted by soil quality, not the same as a physical hectare) or if they run a special branch of production (dział specjalny, e.g. greenhouse growing, intensive livestock); also household members over 16 who work on the farm (domownik). The condition is that they are not covered by another social insurance scheme and have no pension or benefit already granted. People with other insurance, or with a smaller holding, can be insured on application. It does not apply to legal persons (companies).
The contribution is a flat amount per person, paid quarterly (31 January, 30 April, 31 July, 31 October). In Q4 2026, for each insured person it is PLN 178 a month for old-age and disability insurance plus PLN 78 a month for accident, sickness and maternity insurance, i.e. PLN 768 per quarter. Holdings above 50 ha przeliczeniowy also pay an area-based surcharge (PLN 214–855 a month); people who also run a non-farm business pay double the basic pension contribution. The accident and sickness contribution is set quarterly by the Rada Rolników.
