ZPIZ is Slovenia's state pension and disability insurer. Farmers are also insured here: the insurance gives an old-age pension, disability benefits and survivors' benefits. It concerns farmers whose farm is their main livelihood, or who want to build up pension rights voluntarily.
Under Article 17 of ZPIZ-2 a farmer is compulsorily insured if fit for farm work, not a student, not receiving an early, old-age, widow's or disability pension, and if the farm's agricultural income per insured member reaches a monthly amount equal to 60% of the Slovenian average wage (the annual figure is set by the minister for agriculture). Income from basic agricultural and forestry activity, other agricultural activity and supplementary farm activities counts. Commercial fishers in the fisheries register can be insured in the same way. Below the threshold you can still join the compulsory insurance (Article 17(4)).
Contributions are paid on the insurance base (zavarovalna osnova); if the farmer's income is below 60% of the average wage, the base is that amount (monthly), with an upper limit of 3.5 times the average wage. Ask ZPIZ or the tax administration for the rate and the current amount.
