Austria's social insurer for the self-employed: it runs health, pension and accident insurance for farmers, tradespeople and freelancers. Farmers (and their family members) are insured under the Bauern-Sozialversicherungsgesetz (BSVG). You register the start of farming and any changes here, and it bills your contributions.
Compulsory insurance under the BSVG if you run a farm or forest holding on your own account and risk (§ 2 (1) 1): health and pension insurance if the holding's assessed value (Einheitswert) reaches or exceeds €1,500, and below that if you mainly live on the holding's income (§ 2 (2)); accident insurance from an assessed value of €150 (§ 3 (2)). Children, grandchildren, a spouse and parents staying on after handover can also be insured if the farm is their main occupation; pension insurance from age 15.
The contribution base (Beitragsgrundlage, BSVG § 23) is the insurance value (Versicherungswert): a sliding percentage of the holding's assessed value (Einheitswert) (13.3411% up to €5,000, then ever smaller rates for each further €100; the rates are revalued every year). Leased-in and leased-out land adjusts the assessed value. Instead, you can apply to use the income in your income-tax assessment as the base (Beitragsgrundlagenoption, § 23 (1a)); the application must be filed by 30 April of the year after the contribution year and can only be withdrawn if the management of the holding changes. Minimum base: in health and pension insurance the amount under ASVG § 5 (2); the maximum is the Höchstbeitragsgrundlage under the GSVG. The SVS publishes the contribution rates and yearly amounts.
Fee basis: land-value based (collected with tax)
