Voluntary
The German association for biodynamic farming, which goes back to Rudolf Steiner's 1924 impulse; the Demeter trademark has existed since 1928. In 2025, 1,599 producers farmed 113,411 hectares to Demeter standards, alongside processors, retailers, home gardeners and supporting members. Its own standards go beyond the EU organic regulation (e.g. cows keep their horns). It is made up of five regional associations and is part of the Biodynamic Federation – Demeter International.
Voluntary. Farms, market gardens, fruit and vegetable growers, wine estates and beekeepers, as well as processors, retailers and caterers can join. Every member belongs to both the federal and the regional association; you apply through the regional association. Conversion starts with advice, and you may use the Demeter label after certification. Consumers can join as supporting members.
