Chamber of agriculture · Spain · regional
Voluntary
The public-law agricultural chamber (corporación de derecho público) of the Community of Madrid, governed by Ley 6/1998. It is an advisory body: it prepares opinions and studies on farming matters for the regional government and carries out tasks delegated to it. It manages the region's grazing and stubble rights (pastos y rastrojeras), runs the hail-protection network in the south-east of the region, gives legal and technical advice to farmers and landowners, and holds the „Día de Mercado” farmers' market. Its 25-member plenary (Pleno) is elected by farmers every four years from farmers' organisations' lists, most recently on 28 February 2024.
There is no membership and no compulsory contribution. Voters in chamber elections are adult farmers (owners, tenants etc.) who personally farm crops, livestock or forests in the Community of Madrid and are registered for this in the self-employed farmers' social security scheme (SETA/RETA); registered family members up to the second degree working with them; and legal persons whose sole activity is farming or forestry in the region (Ley 6/1998, art. 17). Livestock keepers can apply to the chamber for grazing allocations.
No fee: by law the chamber is funded by regional budget grants, other public contributions, income from its own assets and charges for services (Ley 6/1998, art. 14). Livestock keepers pay for allocated grazing at the price set by the Junta de Fomento Pecuario; the application deadline for the 2025/26 grazing year was 29 May.
