The consortium protecting Chianti Classico DOCG and Vin Santo del Chianti Classico DOC wine, founded in 1924 as the first wine consortium in Italy. It reports 480 producers, 342 of whom sell under their own label with the Black Rooster (Gallo Nero) mark. It protects the designation and the Gallo Nero trademark against counterfeiting and promotes the wine and the area. Under a ministerial mandate (art. 41 c. 1 and 4) it acts on behalf of the whole designation.
Membership is voluntary. Under Legge 238/2016 art. 41 c. 5, however, the consortium's costs are borne not only by members but by every operator registered in the control system, even non-members ("erga omnes"): anyone who grows grapes for, makes or bottles Chianti Classico DOCG or Vin Santo del Chianti Classico DOC in the Chianti Classico area (provinces of Florence and Siena) pays a contribution. The ministry confirmed the mandate by decree of 22 April 2024.
The consortium does not publish its membership fee or the erga omnes contribution — please ask directly. By law the contribution is based on the quantity of grapes, wine and bottles produced; details are set by D.M. 18 luglio 2018.
